Our Story

I started Sustene to create the maternity underwear I wish I had when I was pregnant.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I couldn't find underwear options that fit well and were also made from non-toxic, organic materials I felt good about wearing against my skin.

Then, I was diagnosed with cancer on the eve of my son's birth. My husband and I started our new life as parents juggling newborn care with my intensive chemotherapy for the next five months. Experiencing both new parenthood and my first major health crisis at the same time only deepened my belief that we need better choices for our health, our environment, and the future world we are leaving our little ones.

I left my career as a lawyer to build Sustene because I couldn't stop thinking about how much better this product could be, and how routinely pregnant women are asked to settle for less.

Sustene's maternity underwear is designed to work for your body through every trimester, including the fourth. You deserve clothing that's both good for your body and good for the planet.

Why Nontoxic Maternity Underwear Matters

Bestseller

For Our Health

  • Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and it is absorbent. The skin on your vulva and vagina is particularly sensitive and absorbent, and deserves extra care when it comes to the materials that come closest to the skin.
  • Heavy metals, PFAS, and pesticides can pass through the placental barrier and through breastmilk, so what goes in and on mom's body is even more important during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Organic cotton is natural and breathable. Synthetic materials trap heat and moisture, creating an environment conducive to irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.

For Our Planet

  • Organic cotton for our garments is farmed in Peru with natural fertilizers and pesticides that are healthier for farmers, the soil and local water supply.
  • This cotton is also hand-picked, which is gentler on the crop and the land, and creates jobs for local communities.
  • Our garments are sourced from farms and factories that operate in accordance with fair trade standards.
  • Production of synthetic fabrics, and even semi-synthetic fabrics now growing in popularity, require intensive chemical processing that leaches into the soil and water supply, and exposes factory workers to harmful compounds.
